What is Buddy Punching — and How to Stop It

Costs companies 1–2.2% of annual payroll. Biometrics eliminates it completely.

What is Buddy Punching?

Buddy punching is when Employee A clocks in on behalf of Employee B — using B's card, code, or phone — while B hasn't actually arrived yet. Employee B shows as present; payroll is paid for hours not worked.

According to SHRM research, buddy punching costs companies between 1–2.2% of annual payroll. For a company with ₪5M annual payroll, that's ₪50,000–110,000 per year.

Why Cards and Codes Don't Solve It

Cards and PIN codes can be shared. If Employee A has Employee B's card, A can clock B in. This is the fundamental weakness of any non-biometric system.

How Biometrics Eliminates Buddy Punching

Biometric attendance requires the employee's actual body — fingerprint or face. Nobody can clock in for someone else without their physical presence. It's the only method that completely eliminates buddy punching.

  • Face recognition — under 1 second, works with masks and glasses
  • Fingerprint scanning — 0.5–1 second, highly accurate
  • GPS verification — for field workers, location verified at clock-in
